What’s in a Name?

I guess it’s pretty apparent that John and I choose unique names for our children. Whether it be the pronunciation or the actual name itself, most people have to hear the name a couple of times before it registers.

“Julia”

While I didn’t play a role in the name selection for this beauty, it fits right in with the other mispronounced names in the Forrest House. It is pronounced “Jewel-Ya”, and you better believe that quiet little girl will let you know if you are saying it wrong. It was John’s Great Aunt’s name, and to this day he will still talk about how much he loves it.

“Jettie Ruth”

We tossed around a bunch of names and neither of us could come to an agreement on one that we both liked. I was having a casual conversation with grandma one day when she mentioned her grandmother’s name was Jettie. I instantly fell in love with the name. John on the otherhand needed a little convincing. John was set on the name Penelope. I suggested that we name her Jettie, and use Ruth for her middle name, after his Memama, and he reluctantly agreed. Now neither of us could ever imagine her being named anything else.

“Erin Layne”

While this looks like a rather common name, it is the pronunciation of this one that tends to trip people up. It is pronounced “Ear-In”. I know, I know. Why would I give my child a name that would continually be mispronounced? This too is a family name. It was the name of John’s Great Grandfather, and Layne is my middle name.

“Timothy David”

This is our most common name, yet it holds the most meaning. As I mentioned in one of my previous blog post, Timothy is named after my brother that passed away when he was 17. David is my father-in-law’s name and John’s middle name. Timmy is one of the happiest kids that I have ever met, and every time he smiles I can’t help but think of my brother.

So what would Forrest Baby#5 have been named if it were a boy?

“Trezephant Schley”

Trezephant was John’s Great Great Grandfather’s name. He jokingly threw it out there when we first found out we were expecting. Over last few months it really started to grow on us. We probably would have called him “Trez” or “Trey” for short.

“Truitt Schley”

This is the only one of our kids that isn’t solely a family name. Last November, John and I took a little get away just the two of us. The daughter of the couple whose AirB&B we stayed at was named Truitt. I thought to myself, “what a great name,” and joked with John and told him, “we should have another girl and name her Truitt.” It is amazing how things work out. Schley, pronounced “Sly”, was John Granddaddy’s middle name. I have had a fondness for it since the first time I heard it 5 years ago.

I love the unique story behind each our kids names. Julia, Jettie, Erin, and Timothy fit their name so perfectly, and we can’t wait to see how Truitt will fit hers.

THE END…
