21 Days

It has been 21 days since the twins were born. Twenty-one days of constant dinging from monitors. Twenty-one days of temperature checks and antibiotics. Twenty-one days of traveling back and forth to the Ronald McDonald House. Twenty-one days of being away from my sweet Jettie Ruth. Twenty-one days of the ups and downs of NICU life.

In the last 21 days, Timothy spent 5 days on the bubble CPAP, 7 days on IV fluids, 3 days under bililights, 11 days in an incubator, 2 days under a radiant warmer, 17 days with a nasal cannula, and 20 days with a feeding tube. Erin has spent 7 days on a bubble CPAP, 8 days on IV fluids, 14 days in an incubator, and 19 days with a feeding tube.

Both twins tested positive for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. Only about 2% of the population has MRSA. It isn’t a big deal unless it gets into the twins blood stream or respiratory system. They are currently being treated for an eye infection due to the MRSA. It seems like everyday is a new challenge. With every good day of eating, comes a day with low respiratory rates. The clearing up of one infection leads to the start of a new one.

Twenty-one days have now come and gone, and we are one day closer to going home.
