I can remember people asking me throughout my pregnancy with the twins if I planned on going back to work. I would say yes and they would spend the next few minutes starring at me with this bewildered look on their face. They would then proceed to tell me that I was wrong and there was no way that I would be able to manage working 50+ hours a week with a 1 1/2 year old and new twins at home.
Over the past two months John and I have both been working weekends. He worked nights and I worked days. I was fortunate to have an amazing mom that would come to my home at 4 in the morning and watch the kids until about 6 in the evening every Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Well this week I made the transition back to first shift, which meant John would go into work around 4pm on Monday and get off around 7:30 on Tuesday morning. He would come home, and if he was lucky, get a few hours of sleep before Jettie woke up.
Well he walked in the door Tuesday morning and both of the twins were awake. Timothy had just finished eating and was working on going back to sleep. Erin, on the other hand, was wide awake. And when she is awake she expects your full attention. So John, being the wonderful daddy that he is, picked her up and chatted with her while I finished getting ready for work. Just as I walked out the door I heard Jettie laughing in her room. She was awake about two hours ahead of schedule. Once I got to work I checked in with John to see how he was doing. He sent me a picture of Jettie feeding one of the twins. His outlook still seemed optimistic.
As the day went by I would call him to check in periodically. Each time I could hear babies screaming in the background. They tend to feed off of one another. Timothy starts crying, then Erin chimes in, which seems to upset Jettie causing her to start crying. By 1 o’clock I could hear the exhaustion in his voice. I mean by that point he had been awake for 24 hours straight. I knew that he would be putting Jettie down for a nap soon, which would be the perfect opportunity to get some shuteye. Nope! During her nap time he had a conference call for work. Around 5 he sent me a picture of Jettie. She had written all over herself with sharpies. He thought he had confiscated all of the markers. He was wrong. About 45 minutes later he sent another text. “Well there is good news and bad news. The good news is I fell asleep for about 30 minutes, so I feel a lot better.” Then he sent a photo.
Jettie had found more sharpies and used our bedroom furniture, walls, and bedding as a canvas for her beautiful artwork. In that moment all I could do was laugh. I mean let’s look on the bright side, at least she didn’t mark all over the twins!
In the short time since the twins arrived, I have learned that sometimes all you can do is laugh. If I got upset about the artwork on the wall or finding poop in all of the places poop doesn’t go I would go crazy. Or maybe I already am!
The end.
